Adele C. Barnes, 97, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2021 at the Overlook Life Care Community in Charlton, MA.  Adele was born on May 9, 1923 in East Orange, NJ to Magnus R. and Alice (Andrews) Cook.  Adele attended East Orange schools until moving to West Haven, Connecticut during the Great Depression.  She graduated from West Haven High School in 1941.  Adele continued her education at Southern Connecticut State Teachers College where she earned a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education.  She married her high school sweetheart, Raymond Barnes, on July 13, 1946.  They were married for 64 years until Ray's passing in 2011.  Adele and Ray relocated to the Boston area in 1948, and Adele began teaching at Wellesley public schools.  She continued teaching until the birth of her first child and then became a full-time homemaker.  The family moved to Lexington in 1956, where they lived for 51 years before moving to the Overlook in 2007.  Adele returned to teaching in the mid-1960s, working part-time at the First Unitarian Church Cooperative Nursery School.  She retired as Director in 1993, with many fond memories of the children, their families, and her co-workers.  Adele continued to work part-time at Cary Memorial Library for several years after leaving the nursery school.  Adele found her greatest pleasure in helping others and in spending time with family and friends.  She was a devoted and active member of the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington, serving on the Vestry and Altar Guild, teaching Sunday School, working on the annual Rummage Sale, and attending Episcopal Churchwomen events.  She also belonged to the Lexington Field and Garden Club and volunteered with the Lexington Historical Society.  For many years she enjoyed spending summers on the Jersey Shore with family and relatives.  In her later years, she and Ray visited and vacationed with good friends on Nantucket and Cape Cod.  They traveled to Europe several times.  She enjoyed a glass of wine (or two) at the end of an active day.  True to her depression era upbringing and her Scottish heritage she was frugal with money, but she was generous in spirit.  Adele was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, her mother and father, and her sister Peggy Richards, who she was very close to.  She is survived by her daughter Cynthia of North Chelmsford, son Andrew of North Chelmsford, and son David and his wife Susan Barden of Saratoga Springs, NY, and grandsons Charles and Emmett of Saratoga Springs.  She is also survived by several dear nieces and nephews, and cousin Bill Andrews.  Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family.  Burial will be at Westview Cemetery in Lexington.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Our Redeemer, Lexington, or to a charity of your choice.  Adele's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Overlook for all the care and compassion they showed Adele, especially during her final months.
