BLUM, Dr. Alexander (Pat) Jr. Of Chappaqua, New York, and Bedford, Massachusetts, a pediatrician who practiced with the Mt. Kisco Medical Group and the armed services, died on August 2nd from complications of heart disease. He was eighty-seven years old and most recently a six year resident of Carleton Willard Village in Bedford. He attended school at Collegiate in New York City, graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, in 1941, from Yale in 1945, and Harvard Medical School in 1947. He interned at Beth Israel Hospital, and then was a resident and chief resident at Children's Hospital in Boston. A member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, Dr. Blum was called to active duty in 1950 and was loaned to the Army for overseas medical duty in Japan and Korea. As Medical Officer of an artillery battalion, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Distinguished Unit Citation for his work in Korea. After the service, he settled in Chappaqua, New York, and was a founding member of the Mt. Kisco Medical Group with a practice at the Northern Westchester Hospital. During his forty-three year practice he became Chairman of the Medical Board and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was also an Attending Pediatrician in pediatric endocrinology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Blum was generous with his time, a strong participant in family life, and a contributor to community activities such as the United Way, a member of the Board of Health of Westchester County, and the NAACP. This outreach continued after his retirement, spending every Tuesday with the American Medical Resources Foundation (AMRF), working in a warehouse processing gifted excess medical equipment and supplies for donation to third world countries. He summered in Bass River on Cape Cod where he was an avid sailor and tennis player. One of his daughters described her father as a modest, kind and gentle man who had a delightful sense of humor. Perhaps his relationship to his family and many patients is best captured in the name of his day sailor, "Patience". Dr. Blum loved his family and leaves his wife of sixty-one years Linda Mosher Blum, two daughters, Jill Millis of West Newton, Massachusetts and Lisa Donegan of Seattle, Washington, and a son, Geoffrey of Tilton, New Hampshire, and eight grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Janet Barnet of Sherborn, Massachusetts, three nieces and two grand-nephews. A memorial service will be held at Carleton Willard Village on Tuesday, August 30th at 3:15 PM and a graveside burial service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts on Thursday, September 1st at 2:30 PM.
