Loving father of Vikram Rao and his wife Beth Waters of Maynard, and Anand Rao and his partner Angela Chien of Portola Valley, CA. Brother of Subba Rao of Bangalore, India and the late Meera Hosangadi. Devoted grandfather of Indira and Anjali Rao, and cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews across the world.

Rama emigrated from India to the United States in 1958 to study applied physics as a scholarship student at Harvard University, where he obtained his MA and PhD in 1963.  He was an Assistant Professor of Applied Physics at Harvard until 1971, after which he worked as a physicist on the space program and defense-related satellite communications projects at MIT-Lincoln Lab, the Sperry Rand Corporation, and the MITRE Corporation, from which he retired in 2007. Rama enjoyed traveling all over the world, but especially loved visiting the U.S. National Parks, Cape Cod National Sea Shore, and White Mountains in New Hampshire. He was an avid listener of classical music, and even learned to play piano in his 70's. He was also a history buff who found American history fascinating. He loved spending time with his family, especially his two granddaughters. Rama will be remembered by all who knew him for his generosity, intelligence, and sense of humor.
