Caroline Nijenberg's Obituary
Caroline Lucile Nijenberg of Lexington passed away on October 15th, 2017 at the age of 77. She is survived by her husband and constant companion of 46 years, Wim Nijenberg. She is also survived by her stepmother Lucy Townsend of Wellesley, formerly of West Hartford, CT, siblings Richard Sidell of Needham, Mark Sidell of Needham, Judy Westerlund of Sweden, David Sidell of New Hampshire, Ann Sidwell of Minnesota, Jennifer Ellis of Wellesley, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Philip Alden Sidell and Ruth Stevenson Sidell.
She was born in Galesburg, IL and lived Chippewa Falls, WI, Wauwatosa, WI, Rochester, NY, West Hartford, CT, New York City, Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Lexington, MA, where she was a resident for 42 years. She and her husband built their own business, Travel to Europe, and she spent many years as a freelance travel writer sharing her experiences from traveling to over 50 countries.
After having lived in the Netherlands for 5 years, she became an avid gardener. She served as the President of the Lexington Field and Garden Club. She was also the First Vice-President of The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.
She attended Hancock Church in Lexington and served on multiple committees including Ministerial Search Committee for the present Senior Minister. For several years she was also the churches' representative to the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ.
A celebration of her life will be held at Hancock Church in Lexington on Sunday, November 5th at 2pm followed by a reception at the church. Donations in her memory may be made to Hancock United Church of Christ, 1912 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA. 02421 and to the Lexington Field and Garden Club, PO Box 133, Lexington, MA 02420.
