Catherine "Kitty"
Simpson Vickery
d. Mar 16, 2026
Catherine "Kitty" Simpson Vickery is remembered as a caring and thoughtful mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. Her life journey began on a farm in Houston, Mississippi, continued through her college years at the University of Mississippi, and led her to teaching in Oklahoma before eventually raising a family with her husband David in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
At every stage of her life, Kitty was deeply engaged in her community. In high school, she played basketball; at Ole Miss, she was a leader in her sorority, Delta Gamma; and during the Vietnam War era, she participated in anti-war protests. Later, she became an active member of parent-teacher associations, the Mothers' Discussion Club of Cambridge, and the local Visiting Nurses Association, where she served as president. She was also a member of the Friends of the Longfellow House, worked as a real estate broker, and participated for decades in a beloved book club.
Through these many involvements, Kitty formed lasting friendships and created cherished memories, sharing her warmth, festy sense of humor, Southern drawl, and exceptional cooking with everyone around her. She was an avid reader and a firm believer in the power of education to achieve your full potential.
Kitty and David established the Simpson-Vickery Scholarship, which each year enables a high school student from their hometown of Houston, Mississippi—someone who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college—to continue their education at a four-year institution. To date, the scholarship has supported 12 students on their academic journeys.
She is survived by David, her husband of 57 years, her three sons and their wives, Jason and Tasha, Lee and Jessica and Joseph and Aggie and eight grandchildren Clara (21), Jack (20), Emma (18), Hugh (18), David (15), Luke (11), Benjamin (7), Eleanor (5) and her brothers Glynn, Jack and Jimmy and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all.
