DEVOE, Dr. Charles Lawrence Of Lexington Mass, died on June 14th after an extended illness. He was born in Neponset on September 25, 1921, firstborn of Charles Lawrence and Grace Goodrich Devoe. He went to Boston Latin and graduated from Boston College, class of 1951. He earned his graduate degree in Electrical Engineering at Lowell Institute School of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949, and a Master of Arts in Teaching at Columbia University in 1958. In 1991, at the age of 70, he completed his Doctorate in Education from University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Lawton in 1950, and they lived first in Dorchester, and then in Lexington. He served in the US Navy from 1942-1946, as EM1/c (T), and was awarded Atlantic and Pacific Service Stars. He also served in the US Air Force (Res) 1949-1953 as Tech Sergeant/Crew Chief. He taught for 25 years in the Boston Public School system, and also worked as an electrician and an electrical engineer. He belonged to the IBEW, Local 103, the VFW, and IEEE. He loved his family, his faith, the Red Sox, and his shipmates from USS Munising. He also loved gardening, swimming, computers, skiing, debating, and he was a master tinkerer who could make anything work. Besides his bride of 62 years, he leaves three children, Suzanne Newton (Joe) of Greer, SC, Paul Devoe (Cindy) of Warrenton, VA, and Marianne (Vic) of South Burlington, VT, as well as three grandchildren, Jeremy Newton of Taylors, SC, Julie Newton of Rome, Italy, and Janet Newton of Boynton Beach, FL. He also leaves three sisters, Patricia McDonough of Bedford, Joanne Aeita of East Hampton, MA, and Mary O'Connor of Hingham and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John Brooks and Richard Moore Devoe and a sister Grace Devoe O'Connor. Funeral from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road in Lexington, on Monday, June 18 at 9AM followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Brigid Church, 2001 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington at 10am, with interment to follow at Westview Cemetery in Lexington.
