CIOTTI, Charles J. Jr. ("Jim") Of Lexington, Massachusetts and formerly of Belmont, Massachusetts, died on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the age of 79 years. Born on March 5, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland, Jim graduated from Loyola High School and received his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Loyola College of Maryland. Jim received a graduate degree from Purdue University in Chemistry and began his career at John Hopkins University. He was recruited to Brandeis University in 1957 where he spent over twenty five years as a much admired administrator and lab director in the Biochemistry department. Jim spent the last 17 years of his career at Harvard University, in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as a Senior Administrator in the Sciences Division. Jim retired from Harvard in 1998 as Director of the Biology and Chemistry Departments in FAS. Jim was well known to his friends and family as a man with many talents and eclectic interests, including science, furniture making, photography, and jewelry design. Jim had a natural curiosity about many topics, ranging from the Civil War era to flowers. A longtime member of Habitat for Humanity, Jim received a lifetime achievement award for his many years of committed service. A devoted member of the Woodworkers Guild of the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, Jim was widely admired as an avid and accomplished woodworker and he used these skills over many years to make furniture and to help build homes in the Boston area. Jim's natural curiosity, combined with his love for people, led him to perhaps his favorite and most endearing pastime, lively conversation with family members, colleagues and friends. Jim will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. He is survived by Geraldine Ciotti, his beloved wife of 58 years. Jim was the devoted brother of Margaret Ciotti Orsi of Dublin, Ireland (now deceased). He was the loving father of Valerie Jacobs, married to Mark Jacobs, of Bedford, MA; Chris Ciotti, married to Bob Hesslein, of Newton, MA; and Chad Ciotti, married to Jane Ciotti, of Wayne, PA. Jim was the truly beloved grandfather of six grandchildren: Sawyer Jacobs, Brady Hesslein, Hallie Hesslein, Jennie Ciotti, Jackie Ciotti and Chase Ciotti. Relatives and friends are invited to visit the Douglass Funeral Home in Jim's memory on Thursday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at 51 Worthen Street in Lexington, MA. A memorial service, followed by a luncheon at the Burlington Marriott hotel, will be held on Friday morning, August 5 at 10:00 am at Saint Brigid Parish, 2001 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA.
