Obituary

Nolan, Col. John E. of Arlington, Sept. 19, 2010. Husband of Mary E. (Tierney) Nolan. Father of Dennis M. Nolan and his late wife Diane of Wells, ME, and Patricia A. Hutchison and her husband James of Saint Augustine, FL. Brother of Eileen Foley of West Hartford, CT. Grandfather of Dennis JR, Jeffrey, the late Kristen, Kendra, Jennifer, Andrew, and Todd. He is also survived by 7 greatgrandchildren and by many nieces and nephews. Col. Nolan (USAF retired) was born in Somerset, MA Dec. 25, 1914. He graduated from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1936 (with his wife, Mary). During a career in Education, he became Principal of the Village School in Somerset. He was commisioned as a 2nd LT. in the US Army April 1943. He served as a Company Commander in General Patton's 3rd Army until August 1945. He was awarded a Bronze Star. He joined the Mass. Air National Guard in Oct. 1946 where he served as a Squadron Commander. He was activated from 1951-1953 for the Korean Conflict. He served as Group Commander of the 253rd Mobile Communications Group from 1968 until he retired in 1974. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the rank of Brigadier General by the Mass ANG. During his retirement, he was an active member of the Lexington Golf Course. Funeral from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington Saturday Sept. 25 at 9am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Saint Camillus Church, Arlington at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday from 5pm to 8pm. Donations in his memory may be made to Westfield State College Foundation, C/O Bonnie Clark, P.O. Box 1630, Westfield, MA 01086 (to support the Kristen D. Nolan Scholarship). Interment Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
