David Stuart Auld, PhD, Of Westford, MA bravely persevered prostate cancer and passed away peacefully on December 5 ^th 2021 at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Loretta Patricia Auld and father of Cynthia Ann Auld and her husband Ted and Douglas Stewart Auld and his wife Jill all of Beverly, MA. He also leaves four grandchildren Camellia, Sean, Clarissa, and David.

David Auld (1937-2021) was a Professor of Biological Chemistry and Pathology at Harvard Medical School and was Professor Emeritus and member of the Board of Tutors in Biochemical Sciences at Harvard University.  David also served on the staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital. David received his BA (1960) and MS (1967) from Lehigh University and Ph.D. in Chemistry (1967) from Cornell University. David's research focused on an important class of proteins called enzymes in particular metalloproteases where he worked to understand the role of zinc in the function of these enzymes. David designed and applied novel technologies such as X-ray absorption and low-temperature stopped-flow spectroscopy to study the enzyme's structure and function aiding drug discovery efforts in diseases such as cancer. As a prominent scientist, David wrote hundreds of research papers, chapters in science books, and gave lectures worldwide. As an insightful mentor and esteemed educator, he touched the lives of hundreds of students at Harvard and post-doctoral associates and helped them launch successful careers in science. David attended Grace Chapel in Lexington MA for nearly 45 years and served as a Sunday School teacher, an Urban Justice supporter serving in kitchens and marches, was part of the Pastoral search committee, serving communion, and as an elder. During his retirement he served as president of the Board of Trustees for the Village at Stone Ridge (VSR) in Westford and was a long-standing member of the VSR Water & Sewer Committee as well as the VSR Finance and Insurance Committee. He was known to be kind-hearted and to give 100% on anything he decided to do. He loved vacationing with his family, fishing, gardening, photographing wildlife, the ocean, biking, playing Squash, and body surfing.  David was loved by his family, constantly had a positive attitude, a good sense of humor, always had beautiful smile, and will be greatly missed.

David was born in Newton NJ and grew up on a farm. His father William Auld, born in Banff Aberdeenshire Scotland (1892), was the herdsman of over 2,000 head of Guernsey cows at Ideal Farm in Newton New Jersey, and his mother Jessie Cummings Riddle born in Williamstown, Vermont (1899). David met his wife Loretta while at Lehigh University and they married on September 2 ^nd , 1961. David attended Newton High School (class of 1956) and was inducted in the Newton High School Hall of Fame in 2007 for his many achievements. David also received of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award presented by The Marquis Who's Who Publications Board for achieving a career of unwavering excellence.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a virtual celebration of David's life on January 8 ^th 2022, which would have been his 85 ^th birthday, hosted by Grace Chapel in Lexington, MA at 11am (if interested in attending please email davidafuneral@gmail.com ).
