GILLESPIE, Donald J. Jr. Of Lexington died on March 22, 2010 at age 89. Raised in Braintree, he was a resident of Lexington since 1946. He received a BA and MA in Music from Boston University and served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WW II "Mr. G" was Music Department Chair for the Lexington Public Schools for nearly four decades. He established instrumental and choral programs at all levels, directed the Lexington High School Band, and initiated a band exchange program with other high schools from Maine to Virginia. He was President of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association and helped found the Lexington Bicentennial Band, which he directed from 1975-1996. He was a recipient of the White Tricorn Hat awarded each year to an outstanding Lexington resident. The Lexington High School auditorium is named in his honor. Don was a member of Kiwanis and an Honorary Life Member of the Lexington Minute Men. He enjoyed parades and piano gigs, tennis and travel, yard work and his dog. He is survived by hIs wife of 50 years Mary Wilson Gillespie, his daughter Jayne Gordon of Concord and her husband Don Bogart, son Richard Gillespie of Lovettsville VA and his wife Tracy, and granddaughter Abigail Gordon of Paris, France. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Lexington Bicentennial Band, Box 173, Lexington MA 02420. A remembrance reception will be held at Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd, Lexington on Friday March 26 from 4 to 8. A memorial concert is also being planned for a later date.
