Donald Eugene Smith, 81, of Burlington, MA, died peacefully on Easter Sunday April 16, 2017, after a brief illness.

He was born in Melvern, Osage Co. Kansas on November 18, 1935 to Gladys Bingham and Morton Eugene Smith. He attended the US Military Academy at West Point.

He met his wife, Judith Corey, in 1957 while working as a camp counselor in Canaan NH, and they soon married in the same town.

Don was a caring and loving father, and above all received immense joy spending as much time as possible with his children and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Always hard working and industrious, Don had a successful career in senior management positions, leading to his appointment as Vice President of Operations at Voltek Inc., Lawrence, MA.

An adventurous lover of nature, among his many favorite pastimes, Don enjoyed long walks along the beaches of Cape Anne, Massachusetts or taking a vigorous hike in the mountains of New Hampshire. Mount Cardigan was his favorite and hardly a year went by that he and his wife Judy didn't scale its peak.

From the farmlands of Kansas, he was drawn to the ocean and fulfilled a lifelong passion for sailing, cruising the coast of New England and racing off Cape Anne. As long-standing members of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA, Don recently became a very active member of the Race Committee and was honored for his service, receiving The Ives Bowl - Good Guy Award for 2016.

Don's many passions included mathematics, the physics of cosmology, geology, literature, the fine arts, music, nature and gardening.

He is survived by his wife Judith Alice Smith, daughter Pamela and husband Paul Grandmaison of Walpole NH, daughter Audrey and husband Dwight Barnes of Deerfield NH, son Geoffrey and wife Karen of Stony Brook NY, and son Brian and wife Sheila of Westford, MA, and daughter-in-law, Deborah Smith.  He also leaves behind three brothers, Earl, Roger and Dave, sister Millie, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his son D.Gregory Smith and sister Carol Smith-West.

Don will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends and will forever be in our hearts.
