Smith, Edward B., PhD., of Lexington, formerly of Needham, April 10, 2016, age 87. Popular Teacher and Dean of Undergraduate Students at Boston College for many years. Known also for his complete devotion to his wife, Ursula. They met on her birthday in 1988 at a support group for men and women who had lost a spouse. Two years later they were married at St. Catherine's Church in Westford. It was a fairy tale marriage: happy, funny, and a life-time of joyous memories. Survived by his adorable wife, Ursula, and her three children from her first marriage and their spouses: Kristine Laping and James Walsh, Karin Laping and Don Garand Jr., and Hans Laping and Moira Gaudette. Plus eight beautiful grandchildren: Christopher, Madeline, Hannah, Isabelle, Colin, Wolfie, Rowan, and Finn. Also by his brother, the Honorable James Smith and Barbara Smith of Glenview, Illinois. Plus two nieces, Elizabeth and Pam Smith. Prof. Smith earned PhD. From the University of Chicago in 1962, then taught in Jesuit high schools and colleges for many years. Prof. Smith's first wife, Sharon Clare, died in 1987 after six months of sickness. Funeral from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington Friday April 15 at 9am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Brigid Church, Lexington at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
