Obituary

Ekaterini (Katherine) Petrakis Speliotis passed away peacefully in her home in Louisville, KY, on Thursday, December 21, 2023.  She was born in Sparta, Greece, on December 28, 1933, to Erasmia Ismene and Paraskeva Petrakis.   In 1951 she sailed from Greece to Boston, Massachusetts, with her mother and brother.  She worked as an executive secretary for several years and then married Dennis Speliotis in 1958 and began raising a family.

Ekaterini sailed from Greece to Boston, Massachusetts in 1951 with her mother and brother.  She worked as an executive secretary for several years and then married Dennis Speliotis in 1958 and began raising a family.
She dedicated her life to caring for and helping others.  Family was the most important thing to her: both her immediate and extended family.  She was happiest when families and friends were together, sharing with each other.  Besides raising her three children, she shared the care for her mother with her brother; she was heavily involved as a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, MA; she served as a volunteer for many years helping people who were receiving a kidney transplant; she acted as translator in court appearances of undocumented Greek immigrants who did not speak English; and she helped at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, MA.  Her home and her heart were always open to friends and strangers in need and less fortunate than herself.

In 2015, Ekaterini moved to Louisville, KY, and quickly became a beloved member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.

She is survived by her daughter Evanthia Speliotis of Louisville, KY, her husband Peter Vedder and their daughters Ophelia and Ismene; daughter Ismene Speliotis of Brooklyn, NY, and her daughter Ariadne; son Elias Speliotis of Southport, NC, his wife Mary, and their children Alexis and Ian; and brother Leonidas Petrakis of Oakland, CA, and his wife Lina.

There will be a visitation at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Louisville, KY on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, from 5pm to 7pm.  A viewing at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, MA will begin at 10am on Friday December 29, 2023, followed by a funeral service at 11am, and burial at Westview Cemetery in Lexington, MA.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, MA; St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, MA; or the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Louisville, KY.

May her memory be eternal.
