Eleanor M
Shelmire
d. Dec 27, 2021
(March 25, 1927 - December 27, 2021)
Eleanor (Hotz) Shelmire, a longtime Lexington resident, died on Sunday, December 26, 2021.
She was predeceased by her husband Dr. S. Richard Shelmire. Eleanor is survived by a
daughter, Carol Reich and her husband William of Sudbury, MA; two sons, Stanley Shelmire of
Somerville, MA, and Robert Shelmire and his wife Patti of Bedford, MA. Eleanor had 4 beloved
grandchildren, Michael Reich and his wife Emily of Los Angeles, CA; Andrew Reich and his wife
Nicole of Hoboken, NJ; Cameron Shelmire and Kara Shelmire of Bedford, MA.
Eleanor grew up in West Roxbury, MA and worked as the Business Manager of Peck & Peck in
Boston until she married Richard in 1951. They lived briefly in Illinois, before making Lexington
their home to raise their family. Eleanor was always very active, volunteering at her children's
schools and The Home for Little Wanderers. During those years, she was also an active
member of the Hancock United Church of Christ in Lexington, participating in several of the
women's organizations there. When her children were older, Eleanor assisted Richard in
running his dental practice in Cambridge. Eleanor enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing board
games, traveling with family and friends, and attending her grandchildren's many sporting
events. She was an avid sports fan and could frequently be found in the stands cheering for her
grandchildren and their friends at football and basketball games, and on the sidelines at softball,
volleyball games and swim meets. Into her 80's she was golfing at Pine Meadows Golf Club as
a member of the PineCones, and bowling in a seniors league. Most recently, she was a resident
of Sunrise of Burlington. Eleanor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A private funeral service will be held, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to Caring Hospice Services, 1208 A VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.
