Elizabeth "Betsy" Ostrom Allen, of Woburn and formerly of Lexington, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on June 27, 2026.

Betsy was the daughter of the late Thalia and Selden Ostrom. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John Allen, and her brothers, Don, Bill, and Jack.

Born in New York City, Betsy spent her early childhood in Olean, New York, before moving to New Rochelle. A graduate of New Rochelle High School, she attended Cornell University as a proud member of the "Super Class" of 1956. After marrying John in 1963, the couple began their life together in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before making their home in Lexington, where Betsy lived for the next 57 years.

Betsy influenced countless young lives throughout her career, first as a kindergarten teacher in the Needham Public Schools and later, for 27 years, as a beginners teacher at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School.

She will be remembered for her quick wit, sharp intellect, scratch cooking, love of reading personal histories, mysteries, and newspapers, and her appreciation of classical music, museums, baseball, and the natural beauty of Cape Cod. Betsy brought curiosity to every stage of her life. She had an extraordinary gift for remembering facts and could beat just about anyone at trivia. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Above all else, Betsy cherished her children, her grandson, her nieces and nephews, and the many dear friends who became family. She is survived by her son, Charley (Kim); her daughter, Kate; her beloved grandson, Matthew; and her sister-in-law, Judy Summersby.

A private interment will be held at Mount View Cemetery in Olean, NY, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, John, her parents, and her brothers.
