Ellen K.
Andersson
d. Jan 11, 2023
Andersson, Ellen Krog
Of Lexington, aged 92, died peacefully at Brookhaven at Lexington January 11, 2023.
She was born March 2, 1930 in Taps, Denmark. Educated at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and the University of Heidelberg, Germany, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1968. She worked at Harvard University's Widener Library for over 30 years, becoming Chief Serial Cataloger. She was fluent in five languages and had facility in two more, invaluable in her library work.
She was previously married to Theodore Andersson, Professor Emeritus of German Studies at Stanford. In 1980, she married James M. Smith, CPA, and they were inseparable for 40 years until his death in 2021. Together she and Jim visited her beloved family in Denmark, cared for family members in Denmark and the U.S., traveled to interesting parts of the globe, entertained friends, and gardened. Often, they could be found walking miles through the streets and open spaces of Lexington, Ellen's home of almost 50 years.
She is predeceased by her husband James M. Smith, her parents Hans Jakob Krog and Helga Dorthea Krog (nee Rasmussen), her brothers Svend Erik and Jesper, and her sister-in-law Hazel (nee Lever). She was a devoted, exemplary aunt to her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews in the U.S. and Denmark.
A private burial service at Highland Cemetery in Ipswich, MA is being planned for the spring.
