Winchester, MA – Dr. Eugene J. Mark, a distinguished lung pathologist and Professor Emeritus at Harvard Medical School, passed away peacefully at his home in Winchester, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family on June 24, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Lorain, Ohio, on September 2, 1942, Gene cherished his Ohio roots.

After graduating from Kent State High School, Gene attended Oberlin College, earning a degree in Chemistry. At 19 years of age, he was admitted to Harvard Medical School. Upon graduating from Harvard Medical School, Gene was accepted to the Stanford University Medical Center for his medical internship, which included time caring for patients at the nearby Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital. After completing his internship, he married Mary Ann, beginning a devoted 57-year marriage.

After his internship at Stanford, he was inducted into the Army Medical Corps. His active duty was deferred so he could complete a pathology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Following his residency, he served two years at the Army Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany. He continued his service for 22 years in the Army Reserve, honorably retiring as a Colonel.

During his remarkable 44-year career at Massachusetts General Hospital, he became a world-renowned expert in pulmonary pathology, authoring Lung Biopsy Interpretation, an indispensable resource that was widely used at a time when this field was only just becoming established. He also served as the Associate Editor for the New England Journal of Medicine and pioneered North America's first postgraduate course in pulmonary pathology. Gene mentored hundreds of physicians globally, forging lasting international ties and welcoming many into his home.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gene's greatest joy was found in his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Mark; his three children, Brian Mark, Laura Mark Ross and her husband, Jason, and Andrew Mark and his wife, Katie; his sister, Janice Mark; and his four grandsons. Gene's sincerity, generous nature, curiosity, and remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met will be profoundly missed.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 17th, from 9:30 AM to 11 AM at Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road, Lexington, MA. A mass will follow at Saint Brigid, 1995 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington, MA, with burial immediately following at Winchester Wildwood Cemetery.
