Obituary

G. Eunice "Noonie" (Coughlin) Martel, formerly of Lewiston, died on September 14, 2017 in Hingham MA surrounded by her loving family. Noonie was a warm spirit with a ready smile and a twinkle in her eye. She deeply loved her family and her friends.

She was born August 27, 1931 in Wethersfield CT, the daughter of the late Robert Emmett and Gertrude (Wagner) Coughlin. She moved to Middletown CT at a young age and graduated from Middletown High School. Noonie was a graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford CT and practiced medical-surgical nursing while there. She met her future husband Cyprien "Cyp" Martel, a surgical resident at St. Francis Hospital, and they were married in 1953. The family moved to Lewiston ME in 1957 as Dr. Martel started his surgical practice.

Noonie was a loving wife and a devoted mother who treasured time with her family. A few years ago, she and Cyp celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary with their family. She loved vacationing in the Kennebunkport area with family each summer and their customary trips for lobster dinners. She enjoyed skiing with her family, especially at Sugarloaf, gardening, bird watching and classical music. Noonie read voraciously and was an astute observer of current events. She was an amazing cook who made legendary blueberry pies, Christmas cookies and cupcakes for her grandchildren. Noonie lived her life with grace, exceptional selflessness, kindness and warmth.

She was the beloved wife of the late Cyprien L. Martel Jr., MD of Lewiston and beloved mother of the late William C. Martel, PhD of Bedford, NH. Noonie leaves behind her loving family who will miss her very much: three surviving children, Lynne Martel and husband Jonathan Kutrubes, Tom and Dawn Martel, Jim and Carolyn Martel; daughter-in-law Dianne Martel; her much loved grandchildren, William, Catherine, Spencer, Myles, Hillary, Kathryn and Megan; brothers, Richard Coughlin of Cromwell CT and Thomas Coughlin of Portland CT; sister Cora (Coughlin) Bindler of Shelter Island NY; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, William and Robert Coughlin; and sister, Anne (Coughlin) Riordan.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Brigid Church in Lexington MA. Burial will be held in a private family service at St. Mary's Cemetery in Biddeford ME.
