Geoffrey Moreau Obituary

August 13, 1957-December 25, 2024

Geoffrey Bruce Moreau was born on August 13, 1957, son of Donald Bruce Moreau, who died in 1971 and June Moreau, a renowned poet, artist, naturalist and Gold Star wife. He was raised in Lexington and is survived by his mother as well as three siblings: Roger from Lexington, Reeve from Rockport and Kim from Gloucester. He leaves behind loving nieces and nephews as well. Geoff remained close to his family throughout his life, and they gathered by his side during the final days of a long illness.

Geoffrey was an individual with special needs and came of age when the movement to recognize the capacities, rights and importance of living a "normal" life imbedded in the community was in its infancy. It was the courage of June Moreau that allowed Geoff to move to a 24-hour staffed residential program run by Nexus, Inc. in 1979. For the next 43 years, Geoff lived with housemates, that became a second family and was served by dedicated staff who grew to love him as well as to respect his unique qualities and capabilities. Geoffrey participated in all the activities of daily living that made a residence a home. Geoff moved to an accessible Nexus home two years ago, to accommodate the challenges of aging. His new staff served Geoffrey with the same kindness, respect and care.

Geoff's life in the community included attending day services at both Kelleher Work Activity Center and American Training. Over the decades, the staff in these programs also grew to know Geoff's unique challenges and gifts and how to best support his quality of life.

Geoffrey Moreau's full life included activities in the community; weekly banking, car rides for coffee, outings for meals, movies, long walks, trips to the beach, regular vacations with his residential program, camp in the summer and visits with his family. His life had the components of a "life well lived" that we all hope for; dignity, pleasures, companionship, being "known" over a lifetime and being well loved.

Geoffrey's services will be held on Thursday, January 9th, at Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd., Lexington, MA

Visitation starts at 10am with his service at 11am.
