SUMMERS, George John, of Lexington, MA, died December 22, 2025 at Artis Assisted Living in Lexington. George was born on May 19, 1930, an only child to the late George A. Summers and Alice (Berdner) in the Bronx, New York City. He was the stepson of
Charles M. Coulter and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. George proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July of 1948 and served as a radio operator (EM3) until July 1952. His tours included Virginia, California, Hawaii, Taiwan, Korea, Italy, and France. During his Naval career, George was awarded medals for his service:
European Occupation, Korean Service, Navy Occupation and the United Nations. After
his service, George attended the University of Chicago where he earned a BA in Liberal
Arts and a BS in Mathematics. After attending college, George was a teacher of high
school Mathematics for five years. George then moved to Massachusetts, settling in Lexington where he resided for close to 50 years. He worked as an author at Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, and then Sterling Publishing Company. As a credit to George, he wrote and published thirteen books and co-authored two more, on the subject of logical deduction and mind teaser puzzles. He also enjoyed watching old movies, reading classic books and was an ardent reader of true crime and mysteries. The ultimate joy of his life was adopting elderly border terriers. George raised at least seven in the span of his life with the last five being raised in Lexington. They were Ready, Buddy, Barney, Phineas, Cherie and Diva. Many thanks go to the people who cared for George in his later years and to the hospice care for the comfort he received while a resident at Artis Senior Memory Care in Lexington. George was particularly fond of animal rights causes and Lexhab; any donations in his memory would be appreciated to either of these charities. George was unmarried and preceded in death by his parents, many friends, relatives and his beloved dogs. In honoring George's wishes, services are private with private interment at Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
