Hazel M. Gordon-Lucas, June 9, 2015. Hazel was born to Lilian and Wilfred Gordon on July 4, 1935, near Birmingham, England. Her early memories were linked to the Second World War, and the German bombings of the time where, she said, her mother made it a game to go into the air raid shelters while her father went on patrol as an air raid warden. Hazel was a dedicated and talented pianist, and got a covet spot to study piano at the Royal College of Music in London. After graduation from RCM she lived in Vigo, Spain where she met Wilder Lucas, an American from St. Louis, whom she later married. After brief stints living in Germany and England, Wilder and Hazel moved to New York with their baby daughter Caroline. They later moved to the Philadelphia area where Hazel had two more daughters, Andrea and Kay. She continued to be engaged in classical music, both as a teacher but as also as a director of Young Musicians Musicales, a series of house concerts in historic homes in Philadelphia that highlighted the talents of young musicians from Curtis Institute.



Hazel got her masters degree in community counseling from Villanova University in the 1970's. She moved to Boston and worked as a stress management counselor and then moved to New York in 1993 where she lived on the Upper West Side.

She loved the liveliness of New York and the accessibility to all kinds of cultural and arts events throughout the city.



Hazel was a lifelong proponent of natural approaches to medicine and health and practiced and taught relaxation and mindfulness techniques in a variety of settings throughout the second half of her life. She loved to travel and to hear a good story wherever she found one—from the grocery clerk, from her friends at her residence from her daughters.



Hazel was an only child. She is survived by her daughter Caroline Kilpatrick Lucas of Lexington, Massachusetts, her daughter Andrea Lucard and grandsons Ulysses and Gideon of Geneva, Switzerland, and her daughter Kay Henze and grandsons Harry and Jack of Far Hills New Jersey, and many friends who loved and supported her throughout her years. A funeral service will be held Friday June 19, 11:00 am, at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday from 6pm to 8pm. Interment private.
