Obituary

CAPON, Jack
Long-time Lexington, MA resident died
February 19, 2022 at the age of 89.
He leaves behind his wife Susan, daugh-
ters Debra and Cynthia, son-in-law James,
and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Jack received his BS from CCNY, his
Masters from MIT and PhD from Columbia,
all in Electrical Engineering. He had a 40-
year career in Science and Mathematics,
working at Federal Scientific Corp.,
Sylvania and MIT Lincoln Laboratory,
and teaching at MIT, Northeastern and
Columbia.

Over the years he published many papers
in scientific journals, and was a peer-
reviewer for Mathematical Reviews. His
1969 paper "High-Resolution Frequency-
Wavenumber Spectrum Analysis" (referred
to later as the "Capon Method") has been
widely cited in the fields of array
signal processing and spectral analysis.

Jack earned many honors and was elected
a Fellow of both the American Assoc. for
the Advancement of Science and IEEE. He
was a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi,
Eta Kappa Nu, Institute of Mathematical
Statistics and American Geophysical Union.
