Jane (Hathaway) Gilpatric Beckwith, 94, a lifelong resident of the
Merriam Hill area in Lexington, died after a long illness on Thursday,
December 6, 2012. Jane was born in Lexington, at home, on what
came to be called Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 (the end of
World War I), the daughter of Bertha (Hannah) and Alton H. Hathaway.
Jane was predeceased by her beloved first husband,
Dr. William H. Gilpatric, Jr., who died in 1974, and her loving second
husband, Ellison F. Beckwith, who died in 1999. She graduated from the
Vesper George School of Art, Boston, and worked in the
advertising department as a commercial artist in one of the iconic
department stores in downtown Boston. She was active in the Florence
Crittenden League for many years and she also supervised the
accounting of her husband William's Boston dental practice in
later years. Jane had an infectious zest for life. She loved to
entertain and was an avid tennis player. She is survived by her
loving family, William H. Gilpatric, III, and his former wife Patricia,
both of Acton, Peter D. Gilpatric and his wife Suzanne, of Medfield,
Jill A. Richard and her husband James, of Camden, Maine,
and Jean G. McDonough and her husband Kevin, of Chelmsford,
and grandchildren William H. Gilpatric, IV, and his wife Lyubov
of Cambridge, Ryan and Shea McDonough of Chelmsford,
Robin Richard of Camden, Maine, and Colin Gilpatric of
Medfield. A Remembrance Gathering will be held Saturday,
January 12, 2013 at Pilgrim Church in Lexington, at 11:00AM
for family and friends. Interment will be private at Westview
Cemetery, Lexington, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may
be made in honor of Jane to The Merrimack Valley Hospice
House, 360 North Avenue, Haverhill, MA 01830.
