JANET GALLUP, SGM

LEXINGTON, MA — Sister Janet Gallup, a Lexington resident and member of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, "Grey Nuns", for over 65 years, passed away on July 20, 2022. Sister Janet was a native of Defiance, OH and was the seventh of eight children born to Marvin and Amelia (Pessefall) Gallup. She attended St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Toledo, OH and later, as a Grey Nun, earned a BSN from Boston College, a MS in Nursing from Boston University and a MA in Pastoral Counseling from Emmanuel College, Boston. The first half of Sr. Janet's career was focused in nursing. She held positions as a nursing supervisor at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, OH and at St. Peter's hospital, New Brunswick, NJ, both in pediatric and adult medical/surgical units. She later served as director of Youville Hospital School of Practical Nursing in Cambridge, MA. In 1973, Gallup returned to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center as head nurse in their habilitation nursing unit and established a patient representative program --- the first such program in northwest Ohio, serving as a liaison between the patient and the hospital. Eventually, Sister Gallup moved from physical care ministries to spiritual care. She became a pastoral associate at St. Ann parish, Somerville,MA, where she ministered communion to the homebound and served as a field education supervisor in the parish's clerical ministry program. She also served as chaplain in pastoral care at Sr. Joseph Hospital, Lowell, MA.

Sr. Janet later served as director of Marguerite's Thrift Shop, Somerville, MA for six years.

Sr. Janet had a passion for history and she served as an archivist at St. Vincent's and assisted Dr. Edward Ockuly with his book "St. Vincent Medical Center 1855-1955".    In her retirement years she authored the booklet "Youville Place Assisted Living on the Former Tower Estate" detailing the history of the property where she resided in Lexington for the past 23 years.

Sr. Janet leaves her brother, John Gallup of Canada, her Sisters in the Grey Nuns, as well as many nieces and nephews. Her funeral will take place in the Chapel at Youville Place on July 28, 2022 and interment will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA.
