SAMOYLENKO, Jay (Sergei) November 29, 1961-July 18, 2011 Jay (Sergei) Samoylenko died in a swimming accident on the 18th of July in Gloucester, MA. Jay was born in NYC and raised in Lexington, MA. He graduated from Lexington High School and attended Colby College before transferring to MIT to study Economics and Mathematics. After graduating, he worked as a econometrician. He continued to pursue his love of architecture and building and studied at the Boston Architectural Center. Despite his many intellectual pursuits, Jay spent more time outside walls than in. He drove out west annually to ski in Utah, New Mexico and Colorado, always seeking new and tougher terrain. He was a distance runner and frequently competed in marathons and half marathons. Later he became an avid cyclist and swimmer. t was Jay's passion for architecture and building and his love of the outdoors that prompted a career change, and so he joined his family's business _ Wayside Square Associates _ as a builder of new homes and a restorer of old. In 1990 Jay purchased a farm property on Davis Rd. in Bedford and began his biggest renovation and restoration project. Through the years he has meticulously worked to restore the home which was originally built in 1705, as well as the barn and farm buildings that were in keeping with the era. He christened the farm Eleazer Davis Farm. Eleazer Davis Farm is now the home of 25 boarded dressage and event horses, a small breeding program, and an instruction, training and competition program. After the farm was up and running, Jay sought a new challenge and career change. He received his Masters in Education from Harvard and established himself firmly in his new career _ a teacher. Jay always defined himself as an "alternative" learner and perhaps that was why he could embrace so many different teaching styles and find a way to reach any student. He went on to work at the Shackelton School and then moved on to The Fenn School in Concord, MA. At Fenn, Jay was able to roll all his interests, passion and expertise into one job as a Shop Teacher and Mathematics teacher. Jay leaves his wife, Lisa Petrillo Samoylenko, daughter Seija Marie Samoylenko, mother Amalia Samoylenko Russian and father Constantine K. Samoylenko, sister Marina S. Belyea, nephews Christopher and Alex Belyea, niece, Amalia (Molly) Belyea and stepfather Stephen Russian and stepmother Karen Deady. Jay also leaves aunt, Irene Shevchuk of Toronto and cousins Lydia and Alec Shevchuk of Winnepeg and Toronto. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 31st at 1:00p.m. at The Fenn School, Monument Street, Concord, MA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the scholarship funds of the The Fenn School or to Concord Academy.
