Jeanne Dunn Fischer died after a short illness on October 16, 2021.  She leaves three children; Mary Ellen, George, and Anne, and 6 grandchildren.  Jeanne was the sister of John Dunn of Waco, TX, Marie Dunn of NY, NY, and the late Joseph Dunn and Timothy Dunn. In recent years Jeanne had been a resident at Carleton Willard Village, in Bedford, Massachusetts, and the family appreciates their kind care of her.

Jeanne was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, NY.  She worked over 45 years as a nurse, in a wide range of settings, and was often ahead of her time.  Jeanne promoted natural childbirth, breast-feeding, and avoiding unnecessary surgery, long before such things were common in the United States.  In the 1950s, Jeanne was part of pioneering work in neonatal care that helped save the lives of many premature new born infants.  In the 1970s, as a school nurse, she made sure that athlete head injuries were taken seriously.

In 1958 Jeanne married Joseph Fischer, and moved to Long Island.  Her youngest child was only 6 months old when she was widowed in 1965. Jeanne raised her children on her own, while working full-time, living for many years in East Northport, NY.

In her 60's and 70's Jeanne became a world traveler, visiting China, Egypt, Africa, and Europe many times. She was a long-term docent at the New York Historical Society in Manhattan, and loved art, music and literature.

Jeanne was a hard worker and a quick study. She believed cleanliness was next to Godliness, a penny saved was a penny earned, and that one must face life bravely.

Many years ago a doctor said "You need to have that knee replaced. I'll book you in to meet with the surgeon next week." Jeanne answered "No, sorry, that isn't possible. On Tuesday I fly to Paris."  She never had the knee replaced.

Jeanne's loving family and many friends were with her to the end, and will miss her dearly.

Burial will be private at a later date.
