Gardner, John L. of Lexington, formerly of Arlington, October 31, 2018.

Loving husband of the late Alvira D. (Rosenbaum) Gardner.

John was born in Medford and moved to Arlington where he graduated from Arlington High School, Class of 1942.

He attended Tufts College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Naval Commission through ROTC in1945, entering the U.S. Navy as an Officer. He served his country in World War II aboard the USS Wake Island and again when re-called during the Korean War as a CIC Officer on the USS Healy.

He married Alvira in 1949 and they moved to Maine where he put his degree to work on the roads there.

They moved back to Massachusetts and settled in Lexington where he lived for 62 years.

He was employed as a Civil Engineer for the Massachusetts DPW Highway Department, where he was involved in the design and supervision of projects including I-291 in Springfield, Route 2, the Central Artery project, as well as other roads and highways, retiring after 37 years of service. His work on Route 2 contributed to an award for the DPW.

John was a charter member of the Lexington Ski Club, skiing into his mid-eighties. He appreciated nature and the outdoors, enjoying time in Limerick, Maine. He remained an active sportsman water skiing into his seventies, bicycling, and continuing to ride his motorcycle. He later stayed active by walking most days at the Lexington High School track.

John was an avid reader and a lifelong learner.  He was member of the Russell Masonic Lodge of Arlington.  He loved automobiles, music and loved to attend local jazz shows in Concord and Lincoln.

Over the years he participated in committees such as the Property and Church Beautiful Committees at Park Avenue Congregational Church in Arlington, which he attended most of his life and was active in the Saturday Nighters' group.

He is survived by his daughter Linda G. Carew and her husband Paul of Arlington, his daughter Sherry A. Gardner of Fitchburg, his son John L. Gardner Jr. and his wife Susan of Reading, and was the loving grandfather of John A. Gardner.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday November 4 at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington from 3pm to 7pm. And a funeral service will be celebrated Monday November 5 at the Park Avenue Congregational Church, 50 Paul Revere Rd. Arlington at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
