Obituary

Judith B. Field of Hadley, MA passed away peacefully on May 4, 2022, at the age of 86, with family at her side, at the Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham following a brief battle with leukemia.  She was born Judith Bard Shenfelder on May 29, 1935, in Newton, MA to Signe Marie (Pihl) Shenfelder of Arlington, MA, and Paul Percival Shenfelder of Reading, PA.  The family name was legally changed to "Field" in 1938.

Judy grew up in Newton, graduating from Newton High School '53 as a National Merit Scholar.  She attended Boston University as a Fine Arts major for a year before marrying Anthony B. Fisher of Lynn, MA.  Following her divorce in 1963, she raised her son, Douglas, as a single mother in Newton.

In 1978, she went back to college full time at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, earning her B.A. in Art History in 1982, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.  She stayed on in Amherst and neighboring Hadley for the rest of her life, working at the UMass Facilities Planning Office until her retirement in 2002.  She enjoyed gardening, old movies, going to antique auctions and the companionship of her friends.  Mostly though, she was devoted to her family, and was a much beloved mother and grandmother.

Judy was predeceased by her two brothers, Robert K. Field and John P. Field.

She is survived by her son, Douglas Fisher, and his wife Katherine, of Lexington, as well as four grandchildren: Emily, John, Stella, and Henry. Services will be private, with interment at the Forest Hills Cemetery Columbarium in Boston.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
