Hemphill, Linda (Cashin) of Lexington, February 24, 2025. Beloved wife of Thomas Scott Hemphill. Loving mother of Daniel Hemphill of Lexington and Bonnie Hemphill of Amesbury. Devoted sister of Arthur Cashin of Nashville, TN, and David Cashin of Columbia, SC, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.

With a profoundly impactful career in medicine and generous love for all in her orbit, Linda's life was defined by care for others. Her childhood years were spent in Amherst, MA, with idyllic summers spent running between the extended Cashin family cottages that filled Lieutenant Island on the Cape. Linda and Scott continued to spend time on the Island each year, and her eyes would sparkle with the delight of sharing this special place and its stories with friends. After a stint abroad in Beirut alongside a family move to the Middle East during her college years, Linda returned stateside, where she earned her medical degree from Boston University, then completed internal medicine residency at Carney Hospital and cardiology fellowship at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Her career in research began as a fellow and junior faculty member at USC, where she advanced early clinical trials that linked blood cholesterol to coronary atherosclerosis. In 1994, she moved cross-country to join the Boston Heart Foundation as a cardiologist and researcher, until she was recruited by MGH in 2004. There, alongside her practice and research, she established the Apheresis Unit in 2006, which continues to be the leading treatment center in New England for patients with severe lipid disorders. Linda was a Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. She was a founding Fellow of the National Lipid Association and a longstanding member of its Board of Directors. She served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation. She previously served as the President of the New England Lipid Association and as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. Linda was dearly loved by colleagues, who describe her as passionate, generous, and always willing to go the extra mile to share her expertise in time of need.

Linda loved to talk about her life of faith and walk with Jesus, which began during her student days in Beirut. Her Lord and Savior was the bedrock of her life, and the wonderful wife, mother and doctor that others knew was also a woman who savored time spent in prayer and Bible reading each morning. She and Scott met in California and were drawn together by their shared passion for missions--giving their time and resources to share the saving love of Christ with all. In Boston, she was active at Park Street Church and Restoration Fellowship. Additionally, Linda was on an area international student ministry team for over 20 years. She and Scott participated in monthly outreach events, reaching many students from other countries in their home and beyond. Linda had a particular passion for Islamic students, having spent time in Muslim countries. Her compassion and love for internationals was overwhelming. She demonstrated God's love for all she came in contact with, and many hearts were transformed through her loving attention. She will be terribly missed by her teammates.

Linda's spiritual journey also had a profound effect on her family. Linda was the one who led her mother, Wilma, to the Lord as she recovered from a serious accident in a hospital in Saudi Arabia in 1969. She was also largely responsible for bringing her younger brother, David, to life-changing faith in Christ in 1971, leading to his ongoing professional career in Christian missions. Her love for Jesus had and continues to have far-reaching impacts.

A funeral service will be held Saturday March 8 at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Rd. Lexington at 3pm.

Visitation at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd., Lexington immediately prior to the service from 1pm to 2:30pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. We will be celebrating Linda's life! Guests should dress as they wish, including casually and comfortably. Donations in her memory may be made to the International Justice Mission (ijm.org).

Interment on Monday March 10 at the South Wellfleet Cemetery in Wellfleet, MA at 1pm.
