Obituary

Loretta (Lorie) Berger, MD of Cambridge, formerly of Lexington, passed away suddenly on May 4, 2022 at Massachusetts General Hospital from complications of a blood infection.  The daughter of Paul and Eleanor (Durkin) Berger of Lexington, she is survived by her sisters Rosemary, Maria, and Natalie Berger; her brothers-in-law John Wise and Erik Saunders; her much loved niece and nephews, Helen, Ryan, and Charles; and her dear friend José Lemus.

A graduate of Lexington High School, where she ran cross-country and played saxophone, Lorie received her Bachelor's Degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Dartmouth College.  She then earned a Master's Degree in Economics and International Studies from The Johns Hopkins University (SAIS); a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and a Master's Degree in Preventive Medicine from Boston University School of Public Health.  At the time of her death, Lorie was an Urgent Care Physician at Harvard University Health Services and Assistant Dean of Clinical Medicine at Saba University School of Medicine.

Lorie's passion was travel.  A student of many languages with a keen interest in world cultures, Lorie enjoyed independent travel throughout Europe and Asia and worked and studied in France, Italy, Japan, Germany, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Saint Eulalia Church, 50 Ridge Street, Winchester, MA.  The family will greet guests at the church entrance between 10:30 AM and 11 AM.  At the family's request, please wear a mask.  Interment will be private at St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford, MA at a later date.

Lorie was a unique and vibrant woman with a flair for fashion and a lively, though sometimes irreverent, sense of humor.  To reflect her colorful personality, guests are invited to wear colorful clothing, if they wish.  With Lorie's passing, her family has lost their favorite fashion consultant, travel guide, personal shopper, and comedienne.

The family would appreciate donations in Loretta's memory to: Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 [ joslin.org ]; or Partners In Health, PO Box 996, Frederick, MD 21705-9942 [ pih.org ].
