MacFarlane, Margaret M. (Lanigan) of Lexington, formerly of Watertown, passed peacefully on December 2, 2017 surrounded by family. Loving mother of Joseph A. MacFarlane, Jr. of Lexington,  John J. MacFarlane and his wife Leigh Ann of York Harbor, ME, and Mary M. MacFarlane of Boston.  Beloved grandmother of Katherine, Ian, and Matthew MacFarlane.  Also survived by husband Joseph A. MacFarlane of Barnstable, MA and numerous cousins and relatives.

Margaret attended Simmons College where she received a Bachelors Degree in Business and a Masters Degree in Social Work. She was employed as a social worker at Children's Hospital in Boston following graduation and then Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA where she retired after 27 years of service. She earned a Masters Degree in Religion from Weston School of Theology in 2007 after her retirement. Margaret devoted her time to teaching religion classes at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Belmont for many years, and was actively involved with Sacred Heart Church in Lexington.  She was an accomplished pianist who had a great passion for the arts and attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra and other musical performances regularly.

She was wonderful mother, grandmother and friend whose beautiful smile and warm sense of humor brought joy into the lives of all who loved her. She will be greatly missed.

Visiting hours Sunday, December 10 from 3pm to 6pm at Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road, Lexington, MA. Funeral from the Douglass Funeral Home on Monday, December 11 at 9am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Sacred Heart Church, Lexington at 10am.  Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.

Donations in her memory may be made to Catholic Charities in Boston. Private interment St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
