O'TOOLE, Martina Buckley – Concord, MA. Martina Buckley O'Toole, a resident of Newbury Court, passed away on August 13, 2022, just one month shy of her 95 th birthday. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Kevin James O'Toole, her stepson Kevin Paul O'Toole, her sister Ann and brother Bill Buckley. She is survived by daughter-in-law Pat O'Toole, stepdaughters Maureen O'Toole (husband James Linckens) Eileen O'Toole (husband Tom Byers), and Siobhan O'Toole Verbeek, (husband Chris Verbeek). Martina was a loving grandmother to Kelly O'Toole (Zierden), Ryan O'Toole, Michael Manis, David O'Toole-Cosner, Daniel Byers, Collin Byers, Nicolaas Verbeek, Aidan Verbeek, and four beautiful great-grandchildren, Caroline Zierdan, Brendan Zierdan, Finnley O'Toole and Adelaide O'Toole.
Martina was born in Boston's North End and was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph from grammar school through high school. She was class president of her senior class. Always a devout Catholic, Martina was accepted into the Sisters of St. Joseph at the age of 18.
During her 28 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, Martina was both a teacher and a student. She taught in several inner city Catholic schools and earned her degree at Boston College. She also earned graduate degrees from Boston College, Boston University, Notre Dame University, and Catholic University.
When Martina was in her early 50's she made the painful decision to leave the Community. She accepted a position as a guidance counselor at Lexington High School. Martina met Kevin O'Toole, the love of her life. They married on June 29 th , 1980 and lived a happy life in Lexington for many years. In 2006 they moved to Newbury Court where they met many great friends, traveled the world, and spent time with their growing family.
Martina will be remembered as a kind woman of great faith, who never met a stranger, and was a champion of the underdog.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Concord, MA. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, Martina has requested a donation in her name be made to the Community of St. Joseph, Mission Advancement, 637 Cambridge St., Brighton, MA 02135. Private interment, Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
