Obituary

JONES, Mary Conroy Of Lexington passed away peacefully on February 19, 2011, with her family around her. She was 84. Mary was born at her parents' home in Collingswood, New Jersey, and graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in organic chemistry, magna cum laude. While attending graduate school at the University of Vermont, she married her husband, the late J. Samuel Jones, in 1950 and began working as a chemist at the Harvard School of Public Health studying the effects of ingested cholesterol and estrogens on various organisms. Later, after years of raising children, Mary returned to school, receiving a master's degree in education in 1971. Mary became a special needs math tutor under the federal Title I program, teaching disadvantaged children in the Melrose, MA, public school system until she retired in 1986. In her retirement, Mary devoted herself to her three grandchildren and traveled extensively with her husband and, later, with other family and friends to many European destinations, China, Australia, and New Zealand.Mary was a fixture at the Hayden Recreation Centre skating rink, watching her two Lexington grandchildren skate, and was a yearly visitor to Stanford's Sierra Camp, where up until she was in her late 70s, she hiked the mountains with her California grandson. Mary is survived by her daughter, Anne C. Jones-Duval, son-in-law, Paul J. Duval, and grandchildren, Monique Duval and Alexander (Alex) Duval, all of Lexington, MA, and her son, David M. Jones, daughter-in-law, Ann Yvonne Walker, and grandson, C. Richard (Rick) Walker Jones, all of Atherton, CA. Following a private, family burial service on Wednesday, February 23rd, a memorial service will be held later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sam Jones Memorial Scholarship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
