Obituary

ARENA, Michael James Of Lexington, May 14, 2016. Husband of Kristine Arena (MacDermott). Son of John J. Arena and Rosemarie (Pitzi) of Boston. Father of David Arena and Andrew Arena, both of Lexington. Brother of Mark Arena and his wife Katy of Houston, TX. Son-in-law of Eugene MacDermott and Anne MacDermott of Denville, NJ. Michael was well known in the Lexington community as a youth soccer and Little League coach, as well as a Boy Scout leader. As an active member of Hancock Church, he served on the Prudential Committee and was a member of the hand bell choir. He had taught his sons to downhill ski and most recently was teaching them to play golf. He grew up in Marblehead, MA, graduating from Marblehead High School in 1982. In 1986 he received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He then studied Computer Science at Harvard University, earning a Master's degree in 1987. In his youth, Michael was an accomplished soccer player, sailor, skier, and mathlete, known for his sly social commentaries and loyal friendships. He took great delight in his vibrant and large extended Italian family. He me t his wife, Kristine, on Bermuda in 1988, and they were happily married for 25 years. They briefly lived in Cambridge before settling in Lexington. They enjoyed travelling together both before and after the children were born, most recently as a family to Italy. Loyal and funny, he maintained many lifelong friendships. Employed by Paytronix LLC, in Newton, as a software architect, Michael was much beloved by his coworkers for his brilliant programming skills and dry sense of humor. Previously he worked at Lightbridge In Burlington and at the Insyte Corporation in Newton. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 19 at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd., LEXINGTON, from 4pm to 8pm. A Memorial Service will be celebrated Friday, May 20 at Hancock Church, 1912 Mass. Ave., Lexington, at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment private.
