d. Sep 15, 2025
Philip L. Read, PhD passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, at the age of 93. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ann G. Read, his beloved children Elizabeth Kenny, Jane Gagne, and Thomas Read, and his cherished grandchildren Michael Read, Ryan Kenny, Philip Gagne, and Ava Gagne.
Phil was born on January 9, 1932, in Flint, Michigan. He earned his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and went on to receive a PhD in Physics from the University of Michigan. His professional career began at the General Electric Company, where he served as a research scientist before rising to director of GE's Medical Systems Division, which during his tenure contributed to the development of the pacemaker. He later became Chief Operating Officer of ComputerVision, a pioneering CAD/CAM company based in the Boston area.
An accomplished athlete, Phil played tennis competitively in college and continued to enjoy the game recreationally with friends well into his 80s. In his late 50s, he became a certified scuba diver, traveling the world with his diving family—highlighted by a memorable trip to Borneo.
Phil was also a passionate genealogist, tracing his family lineage back to the 1550s in Great Britain. A lifelong student of science, he maintained a deep interest in physics and cosmology, regularly downloading NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day to stay connected with the wonders of the universe.
Phil will be remembered for his curiosity, intellect, and commitment to his family.
