On Saturday, September 11, 2021, we lost a world-class father, professor, and baseball enthusiast, Dr. Robert C. Lieb, Jr., ("Bob"), of Carlisle, MA.

Bob Lieb was born in Pittsburgh on March 29, 1944. As a boy his three great loves were animals, music, and baseball—interests he maintained throughout his life. He was also passionate about learning, and went on to earn three degrees: a BS from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania, an MBA from the University of Maryland, and a DBA in Transportation and Logistics from the University of Maryland. Bob lived in Lexington, MA for more than three decades, where he was a beloved girls softball coach to his daughter and many of her peers throughout the years, and a fiercely competitive tennis player in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. He later moved to Wayland, MA, and then Carlisle.

Bob was a Professor of Supply Chain Management at Northeastern University, where he shared his knowledge, insights, and advice with students for 50 years. He was known to many there as an extraordinary teacher, scholar, mentor, and colleague. He was a leader in the Supply Chain Management (SCM) discipline, founding both the undergraduate and graduate SCM programs at Northeastern, and specializing in the fields of logistics and transportation prior to that. He published more than fifty articles in leading journals in the fields of supply chain management, logistics, and transportation. He also authored Transportation , a text book used at more than 200 universities, and a book about basketball called Shooting Threes and Shaking the Basketball Establishment: The Short, Chaotic Run of the American Basketball League . He consulted regularly with such clients as UPS and Penske Logistics, conducted annual surveys related to logistics outsourcing, and served on the editorial boards for The Transportation Journal , the Supply Chain Management Review , and the International Journal of Logistics: Research and Applications . Over four decades, he also collaborated on transportation safety surveys and was passionate about stiffening penalties for drunk drivers, particularly repeat offenders.

Bob also loved travel and dessert, particularly French pastries. He combined these passions as a visiting professor at three French universities. Outside of work, he travelled extensively, often with his daughter. His favorite trips included journeys to meet koalas and kangaroos in Australia, snow monkeys in Japan, and kiwis in New Zealand. He also enjoyed golf, which he played every chance he got.

Of all of his accomplishments, Bob would tell you he was most proud of being a great dad, and if you asked his daughter, she would tell you that he crushed it.

Bob is survived by his daughter Dr. Kristin J. Lieb of Arlington, MA; his first wife, Lorraine Lieb, of Burlington, MA; his partner, Nancy Weinstein, of Carlisle, MA, and many cherished friends, colleagues, and former students. He is predeceased by his second wife, Clare (Pecho) Pinto, with whom he will be buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA; his mother Catherine (Boyle) Lieb of Pittsburgh, PA, and his Father, Robert C. Lieb Sr., of Pittsburgh, PA. His tireless devotion to his family and friends was evident in his final moments, which were spent with loved ones at Hospice House in Lincoln, MA.

We will all miss his signature kindness, generosity, integrity, clarity, humor, wit, loyalty, and love. May he rest in peace with his beloved Clare (and all of his past pets), and visit us in beautiful and varied energetic forms forever.

A private funeral service for close friends and family will be held at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA on Saturday, September 18. A celebration of Bob's life will follow in the late spring or early summer of 2022.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that any donations in Bob's honor be made directly to Care Dimensions Hospice House whose gifted nurses and doctors provided him with compassionate care in his final days.
