Whipple, S. Lawrence "Larry" of Lexington, died Tuesday June 29, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born Sept. 7, 1921 in Arlington, the son of Paul and Marion (Green) Whipple and the brother of the late Paul T. Whipple. He moved to Lexington in 1929. His was a lifetime caught up in local history, as he recorded dozens of oral history tapes and took thousands of photographs. He was alumnus of Hancock School in Lexington; the old Senior High School, Class of 1939; Boston University, Class of 1943; Boston Museum School, Class of 1960. His first job was at WBZ News radio, where he remained until 1946 as a news editor. With hobbies including watercolors and tennis, Larry was active in many organizations: Lexington Arts & Crafts Society (President); Lexington Tennis Association; Lexington Gridiron Club; The Thoreau Society; Lexington Chapter, American Red Cross (President); and the Lexington Historical Society, in which he was active since 1954, and served over twenty years as Historian-Archivist. In later years he took the role of Director of Battle Green Guides, and was also active in gravestone preservation at the town's Old Burial Ground. He was also a Trustee of the Isaac Harris Cary Educational Fund. Awarded the White Tricorne Hat in 1984, the town's most prestigious award, and the Minuteman Cane award in 2003, Larry was considered one of the outstanding citizens in the town's history that he had worked so hard to preserve. Visiting Hours will be held Thursday July 1 at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington from 4pm to 7pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
