Sumshun Samson Lau

July 30, 1930 to June 2, 2025

Sumshun Samson Lau, aged 94, of Lexington MA, USA, previously of Barbados, Trinidad, Canada and Hong Kong, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025. Born in Hong Kong, to parents Lau Mee Yan and Ho Yuk Chung, Samson was the eldest of fourteen children.

Samson grew up in Hong Kong. He gained experience working alongside his parents in the family's garment manufacturing company, and after the war, explored new business opportunities in South East Asia. Education was always very important to Samson, and he left home to study in Canada where he earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Manitoba. After graduation, he settled in the Caribbean and owned and managed successful garment manufacturing companies in Trinidad and Barbados.

Samson met his wife, Roslyn (Alleyne), in Trinidad; they were married in 1961 and raised their four children in Barbados. They spent many Sundays relaxing at beaches and pools; and driving around the island. Being committed to family and education, Samson and Roslyn moved to Lexington, MA after the children received their degrees and settled in the USA. Later in their lives, they enjoyed travelling in the USA, Hawaii, Canada, and France mingling visits to close and extended family with tourism.

He and Roslyn were very family-oriented. They were proud of their children, welcomed their two sons-in-law and enjoyed spending time with their five grandchildren. A highlight of the year for Samson, was celebrating Chinese New Year, surrounded by his wife, children, their spouses, and his grandchildren.

In Lexington, Samson generously volunteered his sewing skills for the Lexington 300th Anniversary, William Diamond Junior Fife and Drum Corps, Days for Girls, Lexington United Soccer Club, costumes for school plays, fleece blankets, scarves and hats for MLK day and Bristol Lodge, alterations for prom dresses and making fabric masks during the pandemic.

Samson is survived by his wife Roslyn; children, David, Jennifer Manning (Gene), Suzanne (Tom Shiple) and Stanley; and his grandchildren Caleb, Eric and Claire (Shiple), and Allison and Lauren (Manning). He was the eldest brother to Faline, the late Kenson, Doson, Annie, Chosen, the late Dickson, Season, the late Kungshun, Chanson, Hanson, the late Ellie, Jackson and Hoson Lau.

Samson will be remembered in a private gathering.
