WINKLER, Thomas F. III Of Lexington, MA. The profession of dentistry recently lost one its most outstanding leaders. Dr. Thomas F. Winkler III died on October 20, 2012, at the age of 71, after a long and valiant fight against cancer. As an endodontist, Dr. Winkler's compassionate and gentle caring ways earned him constant praise from patients who had always feared the dreaded "root canal". He was partner of Limited to Endodontics for over 40 years. After graduating from Tufts Dental School in 1966, he served as a Captain in the US Army Corps for two years during Viet Nam and went on to earn a degree in Endodontics from Indiana University in 1970. His commjtment to service and ethics led him to be active in the American College of Dentists, serving as the 2011 President of this national honorary organization while undergoing rigorous treatments for his cancer. Dr. Winkler is a Trustee Emeritus of Tufts University, serving as a University Trustee from 2000-2010. The Tufts University Alumni honored him in 2010 with the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to the school. Also in 2010, Dr. Winkler was awarded the Dean's Medal at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine for his 40 years of service to the school as a volunteer teacher, mentor, and Board leader. He was a role model to everyone. His colleagues, classmates, and students spoke often of his thoughtfulness, integrity, and dedication. As the Class of 1982 wrote, "No words could describe your selfless devotion to both our Academic and Personal goals. Outstanding Clinician, Teacher, and True Friend." He was a member of many local and national dental organizations, serving as President for several of them. Most of all, Dr. Winkler will be remembered for his generosity, warmth, and kindness, always thinking of everyone else first. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Barbara Kay of Lexington, MA, his predeceased wife, Catherine Winkler (Curtis), his son Andrew Winkler and wife, Brenda, of Chapel Hill, NC, his son David Winkler and wife, Marina, of Somerville, MA, his daughter Dr. Elizabeth Jones and husband, Kevin of Concord, MA, his step-daughter, Deborah Kay and husband, Christopher, of Seattle, WA, and seven grandchildren.
