Warren "Biff" Manhard (December 10, 1935 - March 10, 2024), beloved husband, father and grandfather passed suddenly after a short illness.

He was a graduate of Newton High School, Tufts University and Brown University. During all his high school and college years he played drums in the schools' orchestras and bands. At Tufts he led efforts to reactivate a dormant chapter of the Theta Chi fraternity serving as Secretary, Treasurer and President during his college years.

He chose mathematics education as his career in order to influence young lives to do the same. He was an exceptional educator throughout all phases of his life.  At  Newton South High School he taught for 37 years, for 34 of which he served as Mathematics Department Chair.  In that role he nurtured new and experienced teachers alike, encouraging each to keep evaluating their practice with new ideas and growth. On one Thanksgiving half-school day he arrived at class to discover the previous year's graduated advanced placement class, to a person appeared in place of his normal class and applauded him.

He was deeply respected by those who worked for and with him. In 1995 he was lauded by Colleagues, Faculty and Staff of Newton South High School as 'A man of great integrity, ability, ideals and uncommon common sense serving the cause of excellence in education.' At the retirement party held in his honor, his colleagues, all wearing 'Where's Warren' t-shirts, celebrated his career with an opera they had written, and a Charleston dance routine.

In addition to his work at Newton South he taught calculus and pre-calculus to adults in the evening division of Middlesex Community College to enable them to qualify for better jobs.  He wrote a precalculus textbook for these students to assure their continued growth in mathematics.

A recipient of the Mathematics Association of America Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching, he was recognized beyond Newton South for his outstanding teaching. He published articles, spoke at conferences and led professional development workshops. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, and Executive Director of the Eastern Massachusetts Association of  Mathematics Department Heads.

A crucible of his youth was Camp Pinnacle in Lyme, New Hampshire.   Off and on for 27 years the camp was a 'home away from home' each summer. He grew to be head of camping and outdoor life, head of canoeing, and the frontiersmen taking campers on long trips to the 'wilderness' and Lake Menphreagog.  Skills learned at Pinnacle were central to his later professional life.  Presently every 3-4 years Pinnacle-ites still gather for a weekend reunion in Lyme.

Hiking and skiing in the mountains of New Hampshire as well as it's white water pursuits each spring in camaraderie with Appalachian Mountain Club members was a staple activity.  It was an invigorating sport he shared with his whole family over the years.

He became leader and Chair of the Boston White Water Committee and served for three years on the AMC Board of Directors and as an officer of the club. He remained an active member of the AMC for his lifetime.

His devotion to his family was the center of his world. He met his wife, Patricia, when she came for a white water boating rating at an AMC tryout. They 'paddled together' from then on for 52 years.

He was devoted to his two sons and three grandchildren.  He designed and built with them over ten years his ideal all-seasons house on a lake in New Hampshire: a family outpost for an out-of-doors life and lasting friendships.

As academics, with summers free, Warren and Patricia traveled and hiked extensively in and around over 30 countries including Norway, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria and Russia. The last trip before pandemic was a three-week journey up the Danube.  In the US they visited most of the National Parks and State Capitals. In later years he enjoyed bicycling on extended trips in Canada, Austria and Florida.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Young Manhard of Lexington, MA, two sons, Christopher Bing Manhard of Arlington MA, and Peter Manhard of Chatham, MA, and three grandchildren, Christian Manhard of Concord, NH, Amy Manhard of Denver, CO, and Tessa Pavlik of Boston, MA.

Warren will be deeply missed and never forgotten.  He was loved beyond measure.  "I am only out of sight, not out of mind."
