Obituary

Hurley, William J. of Woburn, formerly of Lexington, December 9, 2023. Beloved husband of the late Janet E. Hurley (Anderson). Loving father of David Hurley and his wife Nancy of Billerica, Scott Hurley and his wife Kim of Peabody, and Ken Hurley of New York, NY.

Devoted brother of Lillian Whalen and her husband Jim of Burlington, and the late Charles F. Hurley II, Eleanor Driever, and Diane Leva. Grandfather to Mark, Brenden, the late Jonathan, Hannah, and Mia. He is also survived by a Sister-in-law, Doris Hughes, and by many nieces and nephews, many grand-nieces and grand-nephews and his loving homecare team.

Bill was old-school in the best ways possible.  He never complained, because in his own playful words, "who would listen".  He simply wasn't wired for self-pity, but would instead lighten the energy in any situation with an endless parade of jokes - some landed and some could have gotten him cancelled.  But the jokes never stopped coming and it's what made Bill the person who everyone wanted in the room.

He was sweet, loyal, and dangerously charming.  He showed us what true love looks likes, with his nearly 50-year marriage to his equally adoring wife Janet.  He showed us how to be a gentleman by religiously opening doors for strangers. How to be empathetic by redirecting attention from himself to what was happening in your life. He remembered small details of conversations you had long ago, so you felt truly heard.  But most of all, he showed us that humor and an almost superhuman level of positivity is just a better way to live.

Funeral from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington Friday December 15 at 10am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Brigid Church, 1981 Mass. Ave. Lexington at 11am. Visiting hours Thursday from 4pm to 7pm. Interment Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
