William J. Wiles, Age 89, World War II Veteran

William "Bill" J. Wiles, formerly of Lexington, MA and Melbourne, FL,
beloved husband of Mary Downey Wiles, died suddenly of natural causes on
Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in Towson, MD.

Bill was born and raised in Charlestown, MA. He was a graduate of Boston
Latin High School Class of 1941, B.A. Harvard University Class of 1946,
German language training at Johns Hopkins University, and Ed. M. Columbia
University.

In WW II, Bill fought at the Battle of the Bulge, and Bill served as a
"Railsplitter" in the United States Army in Europe. He was a German
translator in an intelligence unit and assisted in re-establishing local
governments after Allied forces defeated the Nazis. After the war, Bill
served in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Bill
subsequently served for thirty years as a civilian at Hanscom Air Force Base
as a Management Analyst.

Bill courted Mary Downey and they were married in 1955. Bill and Mary were
caring parents who raised their five children in Lexington MA. Bill is
survived by his wife Mary of Lutherville MD; his children Eileen Sateriale
(Kenneth) of Methuen MA, William Wiles of Lowell, MA, Edward Wiles of Reno
NV, Margot Ziperman (Philip) of Burtonsville MD, and Charles Wiles of
Raleigh NC; and his grandchildren Maura Sateriale of Honolulu HI, Carla
Sateriale of London U.K, and Henry Ziperman of Burtonsville MD.

Bill had a warm heart, a good sense of humor and he cared deeply for his
family and friends, as did they for him.
